By summer 2010, the expansion of bike lanes in NYC exposed a clash of long-standing bad habits — such as pedestrians jaywalking, cyclists running red lights, and motorists plowing through crosswalks.

Sometimes there arrives a moment of such import, such significance in the history of expression and communication, that we must not do as we usually would, simply letting our tired eyes fly past in haste and hurry.

Rather, we must sit a while, and contemplate. And learn. And grow.

Twelve thousand years ago these jellyfish became trapped in a natural basin on the island when the ocean receded. With no predators amongst them for thousands of years, they evolved into a new species that lost most of their stinging ability as they no longer had to protect themselves. They are pretty much harmless to humans although some people with very sensitive skin may get a minor irritation from them.
